How To Apply Stain

I have been talking about refinishing my dining room table forever. It will be the third makeover since I got the table off a yard sale site years ago. This time, I am just refinishing the top. I will leave the legs white. It has taken me so long to figure what color and look I want. I have been testing out stain colors like crazy.

I first tried Special Walnut. I really liked the color but I wanted something a little lighter. In truth, I bought about six different miniature cans of Min Wax stain from Wal-Mart to test all the colors. My two favorites were Special Walnut and Early American. I chose Early American because it was slightly lighter and I like the tones of it. Today I was at Home Depot and even bought two more cans of different colors to try. I know, I’m out of control. I just want to make sure I have it right before I put it on my actual table. So for now, Early American is winning.

Processed with VSCO with s2 presetI had this pallet board I made laying around. I figured it would be perfect to test all my colors. I took 1×6 pine boards and laid them horizontally (cut to my desired size). Then, I took two more vertical 1×6 boards (cut to the length of the horizontal boards) and place them at each end of my horizontal boards. I used wood screws down the vertical boards to secure it all in place. I originally had planned on this being the top of our toy box we made. I never ended up putting it on because I did not want my kids smashing their fingers. It sat in the garage forever until this little stain experiment.

I wanted to make a quick video about how I apply my stain to the wood. Go check it out on my YouTube channel. I found some old soft cotton pants I did not want any more and cut them up. I got a lot of rags cut out of those pants to use for my stain testing ( you can also buy lint-free rags or use an old T-shirt). Then, I applied Minwax wood conditioner. I did not want the raw wood to soak up a lot of the stain. After the conditioner dried for about thirty minutes to an hour, I then applied my Early American stain. I take my rag, dip it lightly in stain, and then wipe it on the wood in the direction of the grain. Super easy. Continue to do this until all of the piece of wood is covered. After you wipe the stain on, let it cure for twenty-four hours. Really, applying stain is so simple. Next, I will be showing you all about liming wax. I have some expected to arrive next week. I love the look of liming wax and can’t wait to show you all about it.

Saint Patrick’s Day Mantel

The Dollar Store is one of the first places I stop to find simple decor for the holidays. I haven’t done much for Saint Patrick’s Day; in the past. When I was in the Dollar Tree I saw these cute glitter shamrocks. I knew I could whip up something cute out of these. SURPRISE…more banners. haha. Lately, I have been on a garland and banner kick. I don’t know why but it just works for me.

2016-01-18-01-33-03-1-1-1
The shamrocks were a little heavy to hang as they were. There were essentially two shamrocks in one. The outside liner of one and then the interior smaller one. I first cut the string holding them together to get two separate shamrocks.  I then took some burlap string and strung them together in the holes where they were previously tied together. I used a piece of my kid’s old sidewalk chalk as my spacer between each shamrock. Hey, sometimes you use what you got to get the job done. 😉  Well, I got done making the banner out of the smaller shamrocks and still had the bigger outlines of shamrocks left. So why not make another one? I made another banner the same way as the smaller shamrock one.20160118_102946

I kept one shamrock all in one piece to use to decorate. It’s not much, but again, keeping it simple until we move is the theme for holidays around here. I was able to get all this decor for under $6 thanks to the Dollar Tree store. I plan on doing some bargain shopping after Saint Patrick’s Day to find some more goodies on clearance.

Valentines Decor

Valentines Day is so fun! I think in the past I haven’t really put much effort into Valentines decorations. Really I would just do enough to make my kids happy. I mean let’s be real. It’s right after Christmas and it is hard to think about decorating for another holiday when you have Christmas to put away.  It all happens so fast. This is year was a little different.2016-01-12-07-56-50-1-1

I actually wanted to decorate for Valentines. I had so many creative ideas about what I wanted to do for Valentines. This is probably because we are living in a temporary home while we build our house. I didn’t really decorate for Christmas because we were at families houses to enjoy all of their decor. Not having my own house to decorate is making me itch to get into our house this summer and get to decorating. So after making all those cute Valentines garlands from Michaels; I put together a small little Valentines area in our temporary home.

I love all the hand written signs in wood frames. I have seen them all over Etsy for $100-$300. WOW! I was eyeing a few for the new house but that wasn’t going to happen anytime soon. Well, I went to Hobby Lobby to get the gold letters for my chipboard banner. You can’t go into Hobby Lobby without looking at the entire store. Well, I found this awesome wood frame sign that screamed Valentines to me. It was on the clearance aisle for $20. WHAT!? It looked like some of the pricey ones I had seen for way more. I snatched it up and ran. 🙂2016-01-12-07-56-21-1-1-1

I’m excited to use all these pieces in our new home next year. For now, this will be our Valentines decor.

Cake Stand

Target dollar spot. Enough said. 🙂 Ok, I walked into Target and saw these cute scalloped cake stands and snatched two up asap. $5, say what? Now if I could just find that black and white striped pitcher/vase from the dollar spot everybody else seems to have, I would be set. So I love the shape of the cake stand but red just wasn’t going to work for me. 1. I wanted to use this for more than just Valentines. 2. My valentines decor is mostly pink and gold this year, no red. I know, but I just wasn’t feeling red this year. So I decided to bust out my trusty spray paint and get busy. I know that painting them will make them not usable for food. That didn’t matter because they would be mostly decorative. If I want to use them for food then I will use doilies or some type of liner first on the stand.

You know the drill by now. Kill primer first. I’m serious this is unlike any other primer I have used. It coats the object so well that it almost looks like it’s already painted. Truth be told, I have left a few items only primed around my house. It’s a flat white finish and I really liked it for a few things. Next, grab some Krylon spray paint. Here is a video of the way I like to spray paint. Go check it out. It will change your life.

Now these cake stands can be used all year long. I’m thinking they will look awesome in the top glass cabinets on display in the new house. My kids had such a blast making these valentines cupcakes. Naturally, I had to display them on my cute cake stand. Again, there are cupcake liners so they are not directly on the painted stand. Walmart also had this cute glitter heart confetti for $0.98. This year Valentines Day is simple because we are in transition while waiting for our house to be built. Can’t wait to see these stands in action this summer in our new house.

Valentines Garlands

As part of my Valentines Day decor, I went a little garland or banner crazy. I had a vision for what I wanted to do. I really didn’t want to do the traditional red, white, and pink. Instead, I decided to do cream, white, blush, soft pink, and gold. I went to Michaels Arts and Crafts and decided to also make a yarn pom pom garland as you saw in my previous post. They also had some of the perfect colored doilies that I knew would look great on some hemp string. I also found these cool shaped cards that were outlined in gold glitter and soft pink. There were 10 pieces in a pack for $4.99 (use a 40% coupon and that is a good deal). I also found a DIY chip board banner in the exact shape of the cards for $5.99.  My next find were these awesome rose gold chargers. They just screamed Valentines Day to me. I absolutely love the sparkle and color. Then off I went home to make all my finds into my Valentines Day decor vision.

20160112_132229
First, I took my hemp string from the Target dollar spot. I folded the soft pink doilies with gold polka dots in half. I ran hot glue along the crease of where the fold was and stuck the hemp string right down the fold. I spaced them right next to each other barely touching and continued the process with 12 doilies. The package came with 24 dollies for $3.99 ( again use a 40% off coupon for a steal). So I still have 12 doilies left to make something else or another banner. This was a super quick and easy banner and I love how it turned out.

20160109_150158
Next, I took my chipboard banner and my cards. I took one card and put a dap of hot glue in the center and stuck it to the chipboard. I made sure to quickly line it up and straighten how I wanted it on the board before the glue dried. I continued taking one card at a time and gluing it to each piece of chipboard. When all 10 pieces were done, I then took the string (the chipboard banner came with string in the DIY kit) and looped it through the pre-cut holes on the chipboard. Next, I found some cute sticky gold sparkly letters at Hobby Lobby ( by the scrapbook supplies). I stuck them in the center of each board to spell Valentines. This garland also was pretty inexpensive and simple to make.

20160109_145938  20160112_130021
My final garland was felt pom poms. This was defiantly the easiest of them all. So, Michaels has these pre-made 4 foot felt garland in a few colors. Obviously, I got the white. I really wanted it to be longer than 4 feet. So I bought two. I hot glued the end of each pom to each other to create an 8-foot garland. DONE! It was super easy and it is similar to the Anthropology one for a fraction of the cost. Each garland was around $3.99 ( again even less than that with 40% off coupon).

20160109_144258
That concludes my banner/ garland extravaganza. So stay tuned to see all of these pieces in action for my Valentines Day vignette reveal.
