KitchenAid Mixer

When my mom told me she would get me a KitchenAid Mixer for my birthday/housewarming present; I about hit the floor. I was SOOOO excited. I have been wanting one forever. I knew it would look perfect in our new house, on the counter. Now my birthday isn’t until August and our house won’t be finished until this summer anyway.

I started to think about what color of mixer I would want. I have always loved the mint and turquoise color. I started to realize there are so many different colors of blue. There is Ice Blue, Aqua Sky, Pistachio, and the options go on. My kitchen and house have a lot of white and I started to think it may stick out like a sore thumb. I am going really neutral with my color scheme in the new house. I love color but I also plan on keeping this mixer a long time. Some people still have their KitchenAid from ten plus years ago.

So I was back to neutral colors. White, silver, stainless, gray, rose gold, or copper. I went to Macy’s to see the colors and I really didn’t like the metallic chrome or contour silver that much. Nothing else I own is copper or rose gold. That left white. Now the only concern with white is that it will just blend in with all the rest of my white. Who am I kidding? You can never have too much white( in my opinion).

white-kitchen-aidOk, then I realized I had $40 in Kohl’s cash to spend. My mom said she had a 30% off coupon. Just for fun I got on Kohl’s website to check out what KithenAid mixers they had. I saw that there was a $30 mail in rebate on certain models. That made the price too good to pass up. My mom said we should go ahead and purchase the mixer now, as an early present. I was beyond excited and thrilled to find such a good deal.

I chose the artisan 5 qt. KitchenAid mixer in white with a silver band and stainless steel bowl. I almost went with the Pearlized white with a glass bowl. After reading some reviews, I decided the glass bowl was not right for me.  It shipped super fast and I have already used it multiple times. LOVE LOVE LOVE it!

Our hand mixer died a few months ago. I have been living without one ever since. I just wanted to wait until I could get the one I really wanted. Well while I was looking at stand mixers, I found that Nordstrom Rack sold KitchenAid hand mixers on their website. Last month at my husband’s work retreat; they gave all the wives $50 Nordstrom gift cards (so awesome). So I decided to use my gift card to buy a hand mixer. Since I went neutral on the stand mixer; I went with a pop of color on the hand mixer. I went with the Ice Blue. It won’t be sitting out on the counter like the stand mixer. I’m pretty sure I will still smile every time I use it, though. I love the ice blue color but I also love the white for the stand mixer. Seriously, happy girl over here right now! 🙂

The Farm Sink Rethink

I know what your thinking. Sinks? Didn’t we already have this conversation? Yes. Yes, we sure did. Here is the problem, I still can’t stop thinking about that stainless farm sink. However, I had just accepted that we had already been down that road and I had all the reasons why NOT to get one.. Then we walked through a house almost done in our same floorplan that had a farm sink. My husband immediately said, “We did one of those right?” AAHHHHHHH! Then the mind torture started all over again. Did I make the right choice? The farm sink looks so good. Will I hate my sink? Will I regret not listening? Well, you get the idea….

Mr. Whitelane said we should have done a stainless farm sink. I obviously, not completely convinced about my under mount, immediately agreed. So I knew it was going to cost more to change to the farm sink. Because of a series of unfortunate events, we were able to work out getting the farm sink we wanted. Cue the choir – HALLELUJAH, HALLELUJAH! It was like it was meant to be , right? Haha 🙂

At this point, I was like ok I better get this stainless farm sink and be done. Here is the deal. I have done even more research since the option is back on the table. I asked tons and tons of people, who actually have stainless farm sinks in their house, how they have held up. My main concern was the front apron scratching with jean buttons and belt buckles. Not one person had this problem. Just to be safe I looked up what could be done IF it does get scratches. It actually is super simple to buff out the scratches with some inexpensive products found at local stores. Ok, so that solves the whole scratching concern that previously stopped me from choosing the stainless farm sink to start with.

The other concern that stopped me, from originally choosing the stainless farm sink, was trendiness. Is the farm sink just a trend that will go out style in a few years. I mean your cabinets and plumbing are completely different for a farm sink than an under mount sink. It will not be easy or cheap to take out the farm sink later down the road. It is a commitment that is not worth changing. We plan on being in the house for a little while and I don’t want to choose something that goes out of style while we are there. Especially something like a sink. The sink is a focal point of the kitchen. So of course, I looked into what people are saying about farm sinks going out of style. They have been “in” for a few years. Well here is the thing, nobody really knows. Some say they will and others say they won’t. Moral of the story, you have to go with what you love. If you love it enough, then you won’t have a problem even when it does go out of style. Also, if it fits with the style of your house then a farm sink can be timeless.

So then we went through the options of what type of stainless farm sink. I was searching a few options but I knew exactly what I wanted.  I wanted a 70/30 divider in the stainless farm sink. I really wanted a lower bridge (lower bowl divider as you can see in the picture below) sink that I talked about in my previous sink post. I didn’t even know if that existed in a stainless farm sink. THEN Mr. Whitelane found THE ONE! It’s like when you are trying on wedding dresses and as soon as you put the right one on you just “know.”  The “strive” kitchen sink by Kohler. I just knew this was THE ONE. I was so excited when Mr. Whitelane showed me this sink. It was everything I had been looking for. Undermount, front apron, stainless steel, lower bowl divider, and need I say more? We are still in the process of getting the farm sink choice finalized with the builder. I still feel really good about the choice and I think I will be much happier in the long run. I have always loved farm sinks and even if it is trendy, I will love it regardless. I can’t wait to see it all finished this summer. So go ahead, tell me all your thoughts about my indecisive sink debacle….

Cute Canister Labels

Free is the best kind of stuff. My sister was moving and didn’t want these stainless steel canisters anymore. I gladly brought them home with me. I didn’t have any at the time. I put my flour, sugar, and powdered sugar in them. They were simple and got the job done. When we built our second townhouse, I wanted to spruce them up a little. I thought about putting a chalkboard sticker on them to write what was inside. Let’s be honest, we all saw how great my handwriting was on my chalkboard nook :). Not so much. Then I came across the cutest little printable labels from Alicia over at Thrifty and Chic Decor. They were already made and all I had to do was print them on adhesive paper. DONE!

I went to Office Max and picked me up some adhesive paper to go in my printer. I printed off Alicia’s (from Thrifty and Chic) cute labels from here . Then I cut them out and stuck them on my free canister set. I just kind of eyeballed where I wanted them in the middle of each jar. Now the best part is that she has tons of these already with the names labeled. Beans, flour, sugar, powdered sugar, and etc. I only needed three of them but I will be finding places for all the other cute ones too. My canisters sat close to the sink and got wet a few times. The paper started to look dilapidated where the water had hit. It was an easy fix to print off a few more labels and cut them out. This time, I moved them away from the water.

So cute and added a little pizazz to these dull canisters. In the new house, I am going to keep the countertops clutter free. I will probably keep these in the pantry. I want my pantry to be cute and organized too. So, these will still look great in the pantry. Head over to her blog and print some of these darling labels. They can go on just about any container and not just canisters.

The Complicated World Of Sinks

Can we talk about sinks for a minute? Wow. I never knew there were so many different options out there. For years, I thought I wanted a white farm sink. I just dreamed of the day. I had always had Formica countertops with an overmount sink. You know the kind that sits on top of the counter. I just disliked it so much! I found this image on google to give you an idea of what I am talking about. When I would wipe off counters into the sink, it would always get stuck on the sink lip. Uhhhh I could go on and on. Not to mention the aesthetics of the over mount sink just don’t mesh with me.

When we bought our townhouse I was so excited for GRANITE countertops and an under mount sink. Hallelujah! However, I didn’t do granite in the bathrooms upstairs so they had Formica with an over mount (some people do this, like it, and it looks great). I totally regretted that I did Formica upstairs (don’t worry I finally went all under mount sinks in the new house).20150722_095618-1

So now I am building our house and little did I know all the type of options there are for sinks.  I mean I knew that there was under mount for stone counter tops and over mount for Formica. There is so much more than that. Let’s start with my dream of a farm sink. Ok, I still love them but we had a white sink in a house we rented. That poor white sink was so beaten up. It had scratches and scrapes all over it from pots and pans. It just showed every little mark. So I knew that a white farm sink would show all the same scratches. Then I thought about a stainless farm sink. I could still have my farm sink but it wouldn’t show all the wear and tear ( I cook a lot with cast iron and we use our kitchen a lot). After talking to my cousin; she talked me out of a farm sink completely. She said that they are trendy (which is true but so is everything else so that was not a deal breaker). She also said that because they are so low and the apron of the sink is where a cabinet would be, they get scratched up. Does that make sense? So when you stand in front of a sink there is usually a cabinet there. With a farm sink, there is the front apron of the sink right where your jean button or belt buckle hits. So you are always rubbing up or scratching metal on metal at the front of your sink. I had never thought about the outside apron part getting all beat up. How sad to spend all that money on a farm sink to have it look all beat up in a while. It wouldn’t matter if I did the stainless either because the front would still be vulnerable to get scratched with belt buckle, buttons, and whatever else. That was what made me decide that my dream of a farm sink may not be all its cracked up to be.

So I was back to my quartz countertops with an under mount sink. Then you have to decide if you want the bowl to made of stainless steel , composite granite, cast iron, quartz ( yes you can have a quartz countertop and matching sink), or copper.  I chose stainless steel but I then had to choose a bowl size. You can have a single open large bowl, 50/50 bowl ,60/40 or 70/30. I decided that I would like the 70/30 bowl size best so that I could clean larger pots and pans on one side. But the options don’t stop there, people. What side do you put the garbage disposal on? I’m still torn about this one….uhhgg it literally keeps me up at night. I don’t know? The small side? The big side? I ended up putting it on the small side but I’m still not sure I made the right choice. Here is a picture of the sink at the Oakwood Homes Design Center that will be similar to the style I chose.

20151207_171533
Finally, let’s talk about this lowered bridge sink. I have rarely seen them but my mother-in-law has one and it is sooooo convenient. Talk about getting some pots and dishes washed. Not having a huge divider going all the way up the middle of the sink is so nice.It just comes up a little to leave space between where it stops and the top of the bowl. When it is lower it makes it so easy so put stuff back and forth between the sinks. I love it! This, however, was not an option with my builder so I will not have the lowered bridge in my sink. If I could have gotten it, trust me I would! Who knew that just picking out a sink could be so complicated. Lets not even get started about faucets to go on the sink.
